THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN NORTHWEST CAMBODIA

TANGKORK

This community is a very small community made up especially by youth and children, who have organised active groups. Land was bought for the parish for agricultural purposes and for a national shrine . Tangkork is a very special place for the Catholic Church in Cambodia.

It is one of “the land of the martyrs” in Cambodia. Bishop Joseph Sala, the first cambodian bishop of Phnom Penh died of starvation when he was very active in serving and caring for his people here. In Tangkork many others died, among them many catholics. There is a plan to build a shrine to honour all the Catholics who were murdered during the Khmer Rouge genocide.

A small wooden house is used as a church, where people come also from three neighbouring villages.
