THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN NORTHWEST CAMBODIA

KOMPONG CHNANG

The existing church was restored in 2003 and new land was bought for agricultural purposes. Sr.Regine Marie, a Cambodian member of the Sisters of the Providence de Portieux, is based there and provides cathechism, Khmer and literacy classes to a Vietnamese community made up of 40 families.

Thanks to her presence throughout these years, many children are now able to go to school. Collaboration with the NGO New Humanity has strengthened the Catholic community in faith and service to the poor. A plan for the future is to start a program to support people with disabilities in the area.

The Learning Centre is focus on the Vietnamese population of Kompong Chhnang. Most of these families live at the floating village and is very difficult for them the integration in the Cambodian society, because of their language and culture.

Education, general knowledge, but especially knowing each other, the daily values of the two communities, are the ways to help the Khmer and Vietnamese communities to live together.
